Calling all my IJ Friends!
I'm in the midst of reading Twilight and I need something to read after I'm done this god-awful series (it's for work mostly) . . .

So I need some good GLBT science fiction or fantasy to read after I'm done this series . . .

Shadowvalkyrie, I remember you recommended a good fantasy series that had gay characters in it, what was that again? I was thinking either that or starting Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles (which I only read a bit of so far) which is still in the vampire theme so that would be cool.

Any other recs would be more than welcomed!

(Save me form this het drivel and give me something to look forward to!. . .  *ROFLMAO!)

Have you read Naomi Novik's Temeraire series? Not gay (and there's a small bit of het), but a fantastic bonding story with well-developed characters (most of whom are male) and an incredible socio-political re-imagining of Europe and the Far East during the early 19th century.

It's a fantasy AU historical series about the Napoleonic Wars, except that this Earth's universe has dragons in it. (And no, this isn't Pern.) It's a really sophisticated analysis of how the wars may have gone differently if there was an aerial component. Great writing, too. The relationship between Laurence and Temeraire is complex and changes over time as each of them learns more about the other. The first one is "His Majesty's Dragon."

Sounds interesting, but I'm looking for something where the gay equals the het from Twilight. X^D At least to read right after this abysmal series. Bah. X^D Thanks for the rec!

Vampire Chronicles is definitely very gay. (Unfortunately, everyone's also impotent.) But I like the series, at least the first five books (especially the first, second and fourth). Sadly, Anne Rice went batshit sometime inbetween and refuses to have anything edited, which shows. ":-/

I second the other commenter's Temeraire rec! The series is deeply awesome. (I also think it's full of gay dragon love, but several people disagree. *ships Laurence/Temeraire hard*)

I think the series I mentioned was The Hollows by Kim Harrison, which is AU urban fantasy. The main character is still in denial, but her roommate and best friend is bisexual with a crush on her, so there is tons of UST and still a chance of something happening. The first book is DeadWitch Walking. (And don't let the awfully pulpy covers deter you!)

Oh, and A Song of Ice and Fire has a few (minor) gay characters in it, if you were looking for 'actual' fantasy. It's generally awesome and I recommend it a lot! The first book is Game of Thrones.

Or if you want historical fantasy, there's Jo Graham's Numinous World. The first book, Black Ships, is set after the Trojan war. It has a historical rather than a fantasy feel to it, but it's really lovely!

And it occurred to me that you might like The Vampire Armand better than the rest of Vampire Chronicles. I found it a bit disturbing, but since you have that teacher/student kink, you might like it. *g*

So in any given Vampire Chronicle lots of gay but no smut . . . Hmm. X^D I'm looking for gay and smut! And preferably fantasy over sci-fi!

It was Song of Ice and Fire that I was thinking of! I thought the main characters were gay? Hmm. Still plan on reading that at some point, but maybe not right after Twilight. I still have Lady of Avalon to read, which I just started, but I think I may put that down for a while in lieu of all the het in that as well. X^D Though at least it's not gratuitous. It's not the main focus of the books of hers . . . . more like it's important and plays a central role but still somehow manages to be in the background.

I am liking Numinous World and The Vampire Armand so far the best out of all the recs. You do know me too well about the teacher/student kink. X^DDD We're talking m/m teacher/student here, right?

Of course we do. (I know you, after all.)

And I really recommend Vampire Chronicles. They're hotter than actual porn upon occasion. Did you see the Interview with a Vampire movie? Pretty much like that. And the books from Lestat's POV are hilarious as a bonus.

Numinous World is mostly het (but not exclusively, since it's the ancient world) and the first two books are written from a female POV, but you should read them anyway. The writing is lovely.
